Biscuit Day 2023

Biscuit Day 2023, Celebrating Working Life in Bermondsey

Welcome to South Bermondsey! Join us to celebrate its rich history and diverse working community with Biscuit Day, a family-friendly event taking place on Saturday, May 27th from 12pm to 3pm. The event, which is open to all, will offer a range of exciting activities for attendees to enjoy.

Bermondsey has long attracted people from far and wide seeking employment opportunities. Throughout the centuries, the area has been home to various industries, from tanners to brewers, making it a hub of economic activity. Its proximity to the docks facilitated the storage and trade of food, earning Bermondsey the reputation of being London’s Larder. The construction of notable factories and warehouses further solidified its status, including the first tin can plant in Britain, established for packing rations. In 1857, the renowned Peak Frean’s biscuit factory was inaugurated, offering employment to many, and leaving an indelible mark on the community.

Free Activities

To commemorate this rich heritage and celebrate the diverse working life of Bermondsey, Biscuit Day will host an array of engaging activities. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Peek Freans Museum Exhibition in the market, guided by historian Gary Magold, who will provide valuable insights into the fascinating history of the biscuit factory and its impact on the local community. Artist Sarah Sparkes will lead an interactive session where participants can unleash their creativity and invent their very own biscuit, adding their unique touch to the tradition.

Biscuit Day will also feature Tin Can Alley and Games, inviting attendees of all ages to participate in fun-filled challenges. Children can enjoy Bermondsey Workers-themed colouring activities, allowing them to learn and express their creativity while connecting with the neighbourhood’s industrious past.

Southwark Park Association 1869 will be in the market. Come along and discover the history of Southwark Park, a green recreation space created over 150 years ago to improve the health and wellbeing of the hard working residents of Bermondsey
