New Skills Centre in The Blue

The doors of the former Thorowgoods department store on Southwark Park Road opened once, but this time as a pop-up education centre, introducing local residents to the free training and local employment opportunities available through the Southwark Construction Skills Centre, run by Southwark Council and The Skills Centre.
During their Open Day and despite the terrible weather, many people interested in looking for a new career path, or those who may have been made redundant or looking to retrain, came to chat to SCSC staff members about the opportunities available, not just for the free training but also the employment prospects.
The open day was organised by the Southwark Construction Skills Centre (SCSC) in partnership with The Blue Bermondsey and Big Local Works, who between them are offering around 500 Bermondsey residents free construction and digital skills training.
Those taking part in the training will have direct access to job opportunities at the £500million redevelopment of the former Peek Frean biscuit factory, as well as at ongoing works at Canada Water and Old Kent Road developments.
John White MBE, Director of Southwark Construction Skills Centre (SCSC), said: “It was great to chat to so many people about what we can offer them, and it was a wonderful feeling to see so many people leave our pop-up centre enthused about their future careers.
“We encourage anyone who couldn’t make it on Saturday to please get in touch or come along to Thorowgoods over the next few weeks, so we can tell you what we have to offer here at SCSC, not just in terms of construction skills, but digital training too.”
The training centre will move to a new, permanent site at Canada Water later in the summer, and therefore they are using this stop-over in Bermondsey to ensure that the people of Bermondsey have every opportunity to find out about the free training and local career options available to them.
